Is your boss a woolly mammoth?

It may be a silly question – but to your body it’s more sensible than it sounds.

The human body is an incredibly sophisticated, highly evolved and complex entity. Unfortunately, the pace of societal development is faster than the pace of evolution and that causes us many problems.

Your inbuilt defence system has developed over hundreds of thousands of years to prepare you to deal with threats – to fight or take flight. Unfortunately, that defence system is still trying to protect you from tigers and woolly mammoths while the world has moved on and the threats facing us are very different – the boss putting you under pressure, the relationship breakdown, the shouting children or the neighbourly dispute over tree height!

The problem is that your body doesn’t know the difference between modern threats and woolly mammoths and it responds in the same way – by flooding your body with chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline. With no-one to fight or run away from, the chemicals build up in your bloodstream over time and cause the health problems associated with stress.

The good news is that there ARE solutions. Once you understand how stress works and what your personal ‘woolly mammoths’ are, you can start to deal with the problem. Work out what needs to be changed, what needs to be avoided and sometimes what needs to be accepted but dealt with. Add to this a means of releasing those chemicals – exercise being the best – and you are soon on the way to dealing with stress.
